Extreme Running and Colon Cancer: A Scary Connection?

Extreme Running and Colon Cancer: A Scary Connection? So, I was just reading this piece in The Washington Post, and it totally blew my mind. I mean, who doesn’t love a good marathon story, right? But this isn’t about breaking records or personal achievements – it’s about health, and it’s pretty alarming. Back in 2019, an oncologist named Timothy Cannon started noticing something strange. He was treating young, super-fit patients, like in their 30s, and they were getting colon cancer. Now, that’s not normal, and it got him thinking. Fast forward to a small study, and this is where it gets really interesting. They found a high incidence of precancerous polyps in young, extreme runners. Wow, that’s unexpected, isn’t it? What’s going on here? I remember thinking, ‘Is it the running itself?’ I mean, we all know exercise is good for us, but this is a twist I wasn’t prepared for. Some theories suggest it’s not the running but the high-fiber, low-fat diet that these athletes follow, which could be a link. But hey, that’s just a theory. Why this Matters : Okay, so it’s a small study, and we shouldn’t panic just yet. But it’s a conversation starter. If you’re a marathon junkie or training for an ultra, maybe it’s worth having a chat with your doctor. It’s always good to stay informed, right? Anyway, just thought I’d share this with you all. It’s a bit of a shocker and definitely got me thinking about how we view fitness and health. What do you guys think?
