Probiotics with Antibiotics? What a Gastroenterologist Thinks

Probiotics with Antibiotics? What a Gastroenterologist Thinks Okay, so I got put on antibiotics recently, and everyone’s like, ‘Get some probiotics!’ But, hold up. My buddy’s got a point, do I actually need them? Am I just throwing money down the drain? Why Do We Think Probiotics are the Answer? To be honest, I’m not sure we have all the answers yet. There’s no solid data to show that probiotics are beneficial when you’re on antibiotics. In fact, it’s more like a popular belief that just kind of stuck around. It’s not that I’m against probiotics in general, but when it comes to antibiotics, the research just isn’t there. What Should I Do Instead? Here’s the thing – if you’re on antibiotics, it’s more about what you can do outside of taking a supplement. So, what are the real strategies? First up, eat a high-fiber diet. Your gut loves fiber, and it helps maintain a healthy balance of good bacteria. Second, fermented foods. They’re a natural source of probiotics, so why not get them from real food instead of a bottle? It’s tasty too, right? Lastly, consider prebiotics. These are the foods that feed the good bacteria in your gut, like onions, garlic, and asparagus. Why Does Any of This Matter? Well, it’s all about balance. Gut health is crucial, and antibiotics can disrupt that balance. Instead of reaching for a probiotic on autopilot, think about these other strategies. They might just serve you better, and save you some cash while we’re at it.
